If you don't want to use a mat but want to maintain the same VTA, you can place material between the sub platter and the platter. Options include practically any of the materials used for mats, a large O ring, or a number of discs of paper.
This approach helps decouple the platter from the bearing assembly and can reduce noise entering from that path.
It is also a quick, easy and free way to adjust VTA.Regards
