Re: Audio Technica AT440ML vs. Goldring 1012GX

I have a Planar 3/ SME Series IIIs / Shure V15 III with VN35MR stylus.

Surface noise used to be a big deal for me but it is now quite unobtrusive on my rig unless the record condition is really terrible.

I have made a number of changes to my TT over the last year or so to bring this about.

The biggest gain by far was replacing the glass platter with one I made out of an offcut of solid surface kitchen counter top material (Wilsonart Gibraltar which similar to Corian).

The next biggest gain was replacing the felt mat with one I made out of a sample of Barium loaded vinyl sheet that is manufactured for use in damping vibration and as a noise barrier. A side benefit is that static has also ceased to be an issue.

I have also applied adhesive backed vibration damping material to the underside of the plinth. I think that this also helped but as it is not practical to change back and forth to compare the sound, it is harder to be certain of the benefit.

The other change I made was to wrap the arm wand with teflon plumbers tape. This seemed to help slightly but again it is hard to be sure.

All of these changes are inexpensive and easily reversible.

So far as the cartridge is concerned. A friend has a P3 with a worked over RB250 arm, a platter similar to mine and an Audionote cartridge that is a Goldring 1000 series variant. It sounds astonishingly good. From this, I would be quite optimistic about the Goldring cartridge provided it matches up OK with your lighter weight arm though you may benefit from one of their interchangeable higher end styluses.

I hope that this helps

Regards

David
