It is fairly simple to make one using a router and a simple jig.I have made one out of MDF and a number out of a Wilson Gibraltar (like Corian)sink cutout that I got cheap from a kitchen company.
I prefer the Corian and far prefer it to the standard Rega glass platter.
The one I am using at present is double thickness for the outer few inches and has 2 strips of i/4" "pencil" lead inset near the outer edge to increase rotational inertia.
To my ear, the sound is clearer through the range on any record, surface noise is less, excessive sibilance is gone, and I can enjoy listening to records that I used to turn off.
My technical guess is that the main reason it soounds better is because it is much less resonant yet still gives firm support. I suspect that having nearly triple the rotational inertia is also a benefit.

David
