Re: its not that it sounds bad.

Tommy, you crack me up. So you had a SL120 with a grace 707 and found a better sounding table? I am not sure what a 1975 table and arm have to do with the discussion except there will always be a better sounding whatever in audio. I was in college back in the 70's and had a roommate with an AR table that rumbled and fed back into my speakers therefore by your logic I know all belt drives suck forever.
Give it a rest as the SL1200 is fine for the money and very friendly to use. If we look at the table as the motor drive/platter system it is very good and in the top few percent as far as signal to noise and rumble. Yes an out-board power supply and suppressing the strobe will yield slight improvements. Everyone tweaks their tables which is part of the fun with vinyl playback. How many tweaks are there for the LP-12?
As far as the 1200 arm it will work with many cartridges, has the best height on-the-fly adjustment and responds well to a fluid dampener. I use the optional dampener on my brand new SME arm so I am not sure why this would not be legitimate on the 1200?
