Re: Shure V15 Type II or Type IV with Type III stylus

Great finds! I too have found old dual tables with these exact cartridges.
I would first check alignment and then try each cartridge with its existing stylus. You don't have to use a valued record and they might surprise you.
In my case, the V15II had a bent stylus but I was able to straighten it and it sounded astonishingly good. (Much better than my M97xE). Unfortunately, when moving the cartridge between turntables I pulled the back off the cartridge body along with the leads; something I've since learned often occurs with older V15s so take care! I'm not aware of a replacement stylus for the V15II.
The V15IV had a slightly crooked stylus and the suspension seemed to have hardened. It sounded dreadful! When I tried to straighten this stylus it broke and I've since heard that the V15IV stylus cannot be straightened. I next tried the IV with the VN35MR stylus from my V15III and it sounded OK but I didn't check alignment, play it for long or play it on the same table so this is not conclusive. I have now sent the V15IV stylus off to Shure to do a $50 exchange for a VN35MR.

Bottom line: As is, the V15II might surprise you but I suspect that the suspension on the V15 IV will be shot. I think that you will have trouble getting a replacement stylus for the V15II but the VN35MR stylus should sound fine in the V15IV. (If it doesn't, you pick up a V15III body or sell the stylus to someone who has a V15III body but doesnt have a stylus for it.

I would expect either cartridge to be a good match with the Grace.

Regards

David
