dual score

On Saturday I spotted a Dual 505 turntable in a garage sale. Rather new and light compared to my 1019 but it looked in good shape and on closer examination, I saw that the cartridge was a Shure V15 IV. Not perhaps the most desirable of V15s but at $5 Canadian for turntable with cartridge, who is complaining!

When I got it home I found that it ran well but had a major hum and the stylus on the V15 was toast. I don’t know what they used for a suspension in the Type IV but it had hardened to the point that the cantilever could barely move and when I tried to straighten the cantilever it cracked. I wonder if it’s a different cantilever material from the older Shures?

I mounted an old AT 410 cartridge that I had lying around, aligned it and found that the hum had disappeared and the table was a pleasant surprise. Not high end but, after a brief break in, the combination was very easy to listen to and would make a great low cost starter. I do like that automatic lift!

The old Type IV stylus went off to Shure today to do the $50 exchange for a new VN35MR line contact stylus. If I don’t like it in the V15 IV, it can be a spare for my V15 III.

Has anyone compared the sound of the VN35MR in mounted in the V15 IV vrs mounting in the V15 III for which it was designed?

David
