There is a slight advantage in setting the bearings at right angles to the cantilever (cartridge) rather than the arm.If they are at right angles to the arm, then if the arm moves up or down, it tilts the cartridge slightly from side to side (changes the azimuth) because the cartridge is set at about 20 deg to the arm.
This means that if you adjust the arm height on an arm with bearings at right angles to the arm, then the azimuth will, in theory, also need to be adjusted slightly.
Its probably not that big a deal but the angled bearings are a nice design feature.
