Re: Humidifier dangerous to vinyl??

In general, a humidifier should cause no problems for your vinyl or components but there a a few issues to consider.

1) You do not want to raise the relative humidity to near 100% on any kind of sustained basis or mold growth could become a problem for vinyl, cool parts of components and everything else. This is unlikely to be an issue for you because during winter in Winnipeg, you would have floods of water condensing on your windows long before getting anywhere near 100% RH.

2) Large humidity swings will affect paper (eg Record covers)and if they are sustained they will affect wood and wooden joints. I would just be aware of this and watch out for any problem.

3) If the humidifier is the type that mechanically generates fine droplets which then evaporate in the room air, any dissolved solids will be carried into the room air and remain there when the water evaporates. This will be the "dandruff" you have observed. It will occur with any water that has a high mineral content whether the water is hard or soft.
Other types of humidifier such as those that boil the water or those that evaporate the water on media inside the humidifier will deposit the solids inside the humidifier.

David
