I guess that I see it a bit differently.
If the stylus is conical then then the contact points on both sides of the groove will be on the radius line from the spindle to the stylus. This will vary backwards and forwars slightly slightly as the groove wiggles when sound is louder on one channel or the other.
With an elliptical or line contact cartridge, the same thing will occur so long as the stylus is in proper alignment.
In neither case do I see the outer edge leading.
