Re: Get Back Into Vinyl? Help!

Dave,

You can get into vinyl for much less. Buy a quality used turntable and a new cartidge and you will be set. I strongly recommend a record cleaner such as a Nitty Gritty or simular. I have been back into vinyl for the past year and paid the following prices on used gear-
SL1200 Technics with Shure V15xMR- $325.00, seller mispacked unit which destroyed stulus and tonearm, refunded $260.00. I replaced arm for $70.00, sent stylus to Shure and got a warranty replacement for $50.00. Put a home made Non Felt mat- $.5.00 on the technics and it sounds great but I sold it to a buddy.
Bought high end Nitty Gritty at yard sale for $50.00, needed new felt pads for $20.00.
Bought SP15 Technics with 3012 SME arm and two headshells, 78 RPM cartridges for $425.00. Have since mounted table and arm in cutting board base for under $100. I use a DL103 Denon cart.- $150.00 and a Luxman LE109 Phono pre amp- $140.00 and this rig sounds very good for what under $800.
Bought a SP10 Mk II Technics with a grace 707 arm and Technics base for $800. With a Shurte V15xMR cartidge the sound is state of the art for under $1000.
I have bought records at the Goodwill for 90 cents or less each and off eBay for under $2.00 a record average. Clean them up real good with soap and water then run them through the Nitty Gritty and treat with Last. The vast majority of these are very quiet with a few to no ticks per disk. If I don't like one I simply return it to the Good will!
My only caution is make sure that any table boyught off the web needs to have the chassis, platter and dustcover all wraped and packed seperatly if it is to survive transit. I would pay the seller extra for proper packing.
Enjoy the journey.
