Re: Throwin' in the kitchen sink.....Teres

Hi Steve,

Nice work. In response to several comments made about your converting your Teres into suspended turntable, I want to note one critical deficiency of the breed which you've sidestepped - this is the physical relationship between motor and platter. With the typical suspended deck (Linn, Thorens, etc.), there are two compliant parts between motor and platter:

..... Suspension
..... Rubber belt

Both of these "links" have a negative effect on speed stability. Like yourself, we subscribe to non-compliant belts (a relative term of course) - in our case 1/2" magnetic VCR tape, along with a rigid linkage between motor pulley and platter.

BTW, we just received a fresh batch of motor pulleys. Brother Jeremy will soon be receiving his and no doubt will report back on whether his Teres controller can put out sufficient voltage to spin the platter at 45 rpm. Our pulleys have about 25% smaller diameter (.375 dia.) than the stock Teres pulley and hence the increased voltage requirement to spin at 45 rpm.

Regarding inexpensive surface plates, check our FAQs page for the part number for Grizzley Industrial Products - total cost is under $100 delivered to the lower 48. While I prefer a sandbox (the way we do it, anyway), it's a marginal preference and the surface plate is a plug 'n play solution - at least for someone who isn't wall mounting their 'table.

Note that Grizzley does not ship to Canada. I understand that ENCO tools (also referenced in this FAQ) does. A phone call is in order however, and not an order directly off the website.

Cheers,
Thom @ Redpoint
