Most masters done in the US from the 70s and 80s were recorded on Ampex 456 and these suffer from "sticky tape syndrome". They can be brought back to a perfectly playable state by baking at 140 degrees F. for an hour or so. Wendy Carlos has some interesting info on her website about this. I have tapes from the 50s and 60s that play just fine and the highs are great. Just listen to Kind of Blue on 1/2 or 1/4 track on a lowly Revox B-77($500 used) and compare it to Classic 45 reissue or 6 eye on a full blown VPI($10K) or similar and see which wins. It even gets more lopsided if you use a great tube Ampex or Stellavox!
Vinyl is wonderful, no doubt, but 2 track pre-records and especially master dubs can be in another league.
