Hill and dale was more for mono.
Passive processors can be used to make the bass by mono for a short period (perhaps a few milliseconds) when out of phase bass occurs.
If the two sides of the groove come together due to out of phase bass, that can knock the stylus out of the groove. The thing is, in most rooms the mono bass is no worries whatsoever, since at 80Hz the waveform is 14 feet long. Before your ear can sort out there's a bass note and what frequency it is, in most rooms the bass is entirely reverberant. So you would never be able to tell where it came from.
I've found that if you just study the recording project a bit, you can sort out how to cut the track without processing. For example you can cut the groove a bit deeper, and back off on the record level a tiny bit. 3dB will cut the excursion in the groove by half so even a 1dB change can be significant.
