Here is what I find upsetting: Soundsmith taking the superb design of the original cartridge and "making improvements" so that it "meets or exceeds the specifications of the original". They take nice, warm, natural sounding cartridges and apparently make them screaming bright...just like they did to my Grace F9. I called them on the phone to inquire about the new B&O cartridges and ask a few questions and did not talk to Peter, but whoever answered the phone was dismissive, condescending, rude, and utterly unhelpful. Classic audiophile arrogance. That was a big turnoff. I decided that if I buy one of the new cartridges, I'll buy it from turntableneedles.com. They also allow returns with a restocking fee whereas Soundsmith just sticks you with their product. Obviously this poor guy in the thread likes the brighter cartridge, but I would be horrified personally. So it seems that what Soundsmith is selling is ABSOLUTELY NOT a B&O replacement cartridge. It is a cartridge of Soundsmith design that DOES NOT sound like the original, but does fit in the original tonearm and looks like the original. B&O should take their name elsewhere.
"Now how does it sound? Two thumbs up! Yes - thumbs up I can't do a direct comparison between the original MMC 20CL and Sound Smith's any more since my little one broke the cantilever of the original cartridge, but from how I remembered the sound especially in comparison with Rega table with Benz Micro MC cartridge, Sound Smith sounds much more clearer than the original. There is a lot of treble content with the new cartridge, perhaps a little more than what's considered neutral, but it's a brand new cartridge and I suppose the suspension mechanism will need breaking in and alter the sound before it settles. Bass extension is also very good. It sounds distinctly different from the original cartridge which was very warm sounding, and perhaps into muddy sounding territory a little bit. The Sound Smith cartridge is more crispier and brighter sounding and leaner body."http://archivedforum.beoworld.org/forums/p/29756/235953.aspx
