I had heard that in the first episodes of the series, they were too busy filming to do any of the performing of the music. They had to convince the producers they could do the acting and performing and eventually were allowed to. It was a TV show and there were some 400 musicians who auditioned for the show. It was just dumb luck that the 4 ended up together.
