Josh, I have used the cork/rubber blocks directly under components, however they seem to do a better job underneath a maple platform or power conditioner. I also use them to elevate my speaker and power cables from the floor.
I did have a very similar bass definition problem, like yours, and solved it by replacing the metal discs under the spikes of the speaker stands (also my equipment rack) with Herbie's Gliders. I found with wood floors it is better to isolate than to couple to the floor. I also used Tenderfeet under all my components. I did move my VPI from the rack to a Target wall mounted shelf, that move helped bass definition too.
