I've had the platter off several times; but don't have the vacuum component. I don't have the added bit on top of the tapered spindle. You can bend a wire, attached it to the screws when you put them into the platter--with the correct tension, you lift the belt off with the platter (you can see the little wire extension in the owner's manual).
I usually just give a tug to the screws and the platter then lifts off easily. Remember, the platter is heavy in itself, so I would try a quick sharp tug upward to just see if that loosens it enough to lift it off.
