You could look around for a used Cornet, I own 2 and they are a lot of phono pre for the $$. I also have a Vacuum Tube Audio PH16, it was a demo unit, already built for $600. A bit better detail and soundstage compared to the Cornet. Kits are $600, prebuilt is $900. Transcendant Sound makes a phono pre kit for $700, they are easy to build. I have built 2 of their preamps. I haven't heard it, but if it's anywhere close to the sound quality of the Grounded Grid, it should be a nice phono pre.
I put some PIO Jensen caps in my VTA PH16, I would have to spend double or triple to get anything audibly better.
