RE: Low Level Hum

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am still working on this however my time to devote to it recently is shrinking. I appreciate all helpful input.

This is what I have done so far. Bypassed the Chang and went straight into the wall, no change. Changed power cords on all units, no change. Changed interconnects on all, (except tonearm cable), no change. Moved phono stage well away from other components, no change. Took the spikes off the VPI TT, replaced with cork/rubber pads, no change. I disconnected the ground wire on the phono stage end of the tonearm cable, no change except more hum.

I removed the belt and now putting the stylus directly on the platter (with the motor on) have found that as I move from a piece of Magic Eraser that is off the platter on the plinth towards the spindle, the hum gets louder gradually by about 4dB's. Also the hum reduces by about 1 1/2 to 2dB's when the dustcover is down.

So, I guess I am down to motor, spindle bearing, tonearm cable or cartridge. The hum is just too consistent to be mechanical I think, just like 50 or 60 Hz test tone or ground loop.

I'm stumped!
