RE: Low Level Hum

It sounds to me like vibrations from the running motor are being transmitted through the platter to the stylus.

-I think you could be right John as the hum increases with volume levels.

If the motor is isolated from the turntable, perhaps its vibrations are being transmitted through the shelf to the plinth and then to the platter.

-It is a VPI Jr. with a MKIII platter, the motor hangs beneath the plinth

I'm not sure why you think the speakers are involved.

-Only to the extent that the speakers (designed to be positioned close to the wall) just adds to the vibration through the wall shelf, then to the turntable.

However, all you need to do is pull them off their shelves and see if the hum goes away.

-Yes they are on stands and I have done that, the hum volume is reduced.

Or, turn the speakers off and use headphones to listen for the hum.
