If you are intent on spending a few more bucks on an upgraded arm, occasionally you can find a SME 309 in the $1,000 range. I love my Origin Live arms, I found an Encounter for $650 and I bought a new Zephyr for $1100. I think they are step up from the Rega. The Audiomods company in the UK makes a very nice arm.

Or as another poster mentioned, the TD124 is a major improvement. I have a Jelco 12" with a few TTweights upgrades on it, coupled with the TD124, it does a great job of record playing.
