It is difficult, but possible. Lighting is the hard part to get correct and having a good concept of what the facets should be on a particular type of stylus is paramount. The styluses I have looked at had even wear on both sides of the stylus, a good thing at least. Getting a good photo head on is another matter. I did have one cartridge I bought several months ago and when I looked at the stylus, it was worn so severely, it looked like a round bump.

Here is a pic of a stylus on a Kontrapunkt A with about 600 hours. Not sure what I'm looking at, though. Still played nicely.
