Help me understand proper loading for the Denon DL-103R

I am experimenting with a Denon DL-103R in a second system I have set up.

The chain is as follows: Denon DL-103R mounted in Empire 980 tonearm with stock Empire tonearm cable running into Sony HA-T10 mini step up transformers, then going into Radio Shack female to female RCA adapter connectors and linking up with a 1 meter pair of Cardas Quadlink 5C interconnects and finally, plugged into the phono input of my Bell 3030 vintage integrated tube amplifier.

What I notice is that there seems to be a pretty obvious emphasis in the upper midrange. Vinyl is consistently more aggressive sounding than cd in this region. I don't even begin to understand whether or not I am "loading" this cartridge properly or not, but I'm hoping someone may be able to assist. If it's just a matter of dialing it in, I really like much of what it's doing right but if this forward, in-your-face sound is what it is, I'm not going to be able to live with this model. It's lush and smooth, but very, very bright in the upper mids. Highs seem okay, but the upper midrange is brutally revealing.
