In my experience, yes. The AR XA has a very simple arm, with no adjustment capabilities. The headshell is prone to failure over time, I recently rewired an AR XA arm and installed a standard SME bayonet plug, it helped, simply because you can now adjust the cartridge in the standard headshell. But I have a AR ES-1 and an EB-101 and they are both easily upgradeable, you can install a better arm, plus the many upgrades from Merrill, Vinylnirvana and Sound of the Wood make it an easily upgradeable turntable. The guts of the XA (motor, suspension, etc)are identical, it seems, to the newer versions, and there are ways to install other arms on the XA, but it is not as easy to accomplish, it entails cutting part of the plinth and fabricating an armboard, attaching/cutting the suspension t-bar, etc. There are ways to do it, though.
