I started out with a Rek-O-Kut L34, I think I paid $150 for just the motor unit. But it was somewhat noisy and I spent a few hundred in mods and upgrades to get it to where I wanted it to be(but a little noisy). I still use it out in the shop. Then I found a rebuilt Thorens TD124 for $900(2008 recession price). I still use it, speed is rock solid and it's dead quiet. I then came across a Garrard 401 for $750 shipped from the UK. The best idler I had found, very little to go wrong and parts are still available. I found Garrard 301 for $750 last year, it needed a 60hz spindle and an idler wheel, but it is very good as well. You can still find good 401's from the UK for less than $1,000. Just be patient, they show up on Ebay once in a while.I think the Garrards are the best of the bunch, quiet, smooth, rock solid speed, easy to mount. I have never had a Lenco or Gates, etc. If I had to keep just one turntable, it would be one of the Garrards.
