Would a longer tonearm, in theory, provide better tracking ability?

I've been experimenting with very old Pickering and Stanton cartridges, specifically the U38/380 variety, on a Rek-O-Kut standard length tonearm. These cartridges seem to perform poorly with a variety of styli in terms of tracking ability and sibilance. I'm wondering if this is more a function of the suspension or stylus diameter or the tonearm and tracking angle. In other words, if I upgraded to a 12" broadcast tonearm, is this likely to yield better results? Will a longer tonearm produce better tracking and less groove wear/distortion in general?
