Top platter really necessary?

I have had a few TD124's and the first thing I do is remove the top aluminum platter and use a different mat, either delrin or whatever I have on hand. I have never used that particular brake feature. On my current TD124 I have a Applied Fidelity delrin mat which sounds a whole lot better than using the top aluminum platter, I guess you can do some scuffing to an LP if you place it on a moving platter, but I have never seen it happen on any of my LP's. I guess if I had a priceless copy of some rare LP I would make sure I stopped the platter before I put it on, but stopping the motor with the switch is not a big deal. Or is it? In any case I like how my TD124 sounds sans stock top platter.
