I don't recommend a skeletal type set up for an idler drive, mostly for the reasons mentioned. Can you make a plinth yourself? It really doesn't take a lot of work to make an appealing looking plinth that will also serve to lessen any idler noise that might be present. But that being said, I don't get any idler noise from my Thorens TD124, Garrard 301 or 401. My ear has to be right down next to the plinth to hear anything.
Jim Campbell makes some very nice plinths, I have one of his baltic birch plinths for my Thorens TD124. Cost is reasonable. He usually has several for sale on Ebay. He also makes some slate plinths for less cost than what others are selling for.
Good luck!
