I agree with you, idler drive turntables need to be tweaked to get all the performance out of them. I have been lucky, I guess. This 301 needed nothing, the 401 I bought a few years back was the same, put on a 60hz pulley, a new power cord and it was good to go. It turned out the previous owner had Martin Bastin do some work to it.
But the Rek-O-Kut L34's I have owned needed much work to be quiet. As good as they sound, they are noisier than the Garrards and the Thorens TD124's I have owned.
Someday I would like to invest in one of those large, heavy platter belt drives, like Teres or something similar with the external motor. It's another world!
