RE: Let's get ready to rumble

I guess I lost track of what we are arguing about.

All turntables produce measurable wow, which is usually designated as wow & flutter. For example, my Technics SL-1200 is specified at 0.025% wow & flutter whereas my Sota Millennia is specified as 0.04%. Neither produce flutter, only wow. Just a slightly off-center spindle hole will produce wow equal to or exceeding 0.1%. Based on these figures, it seems reasonable to assume that most high-quality turntables probably have low enough wow to get the job done properly.

All turntables also have measurable error in maintaining correct speed. However, the better turntables have adjustable speed so they can be set using a strobe disc. My Technics SL-1200 has a built-in strobe in addition to quartz locked direct drive. It is exceedingly accurate with respect to average speed. Last night I placed a white dot on the edge of the platter and timed it to determine how accurate it maintained correct speed. At 33⅓-rpm it took 1890.01 seconds for 1050 revolutions, which equates to a speed error of -0.0008%. At 45-rpm its error after 1253 revolutions was +0.0007%. It's pretty accurate and it has very low wow.

Best regards,
John Elison
