Sorry to hear your misfortune. I always send a link to the Ebay turntable packing guide when I purchase a turntable that needs to be shipped. But even then, you don't know until you open the box. I purchased a Sony PSX-7 turntable a few years back, told the seller to remove the platter and pack separately. He did, but he placed it directly on top of the dust cover, smashing it into oblivion. Fortunately, that was the only damage.
It sounds like your seller will make it right.
