Home Vinyl Asylum

Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

All comparsions and opinions are "subjective crap".

If we played by your rules, 3db, there would be no Vinyl Asylum. Why would you put any real value in the opinion of someone you've never met or listened to music with in the first place? You have no idea what I'm hearing nor do I vice versa. You can get offended if you want to or you can discuss the subject for entertainment purposes.

I've done thousands of rock solid A/B comparisons in the past with different pieces of gear utilizing many stages of neurosis and associated gear matching. The reality is that all A/B comparisons are fundamentally flawed. Evaluations are not an exact science and never will be. About as close as you're going to get is to take a piece, or several pieces of gear, and listen to them for a while over the course of days or weeks and you'll find that an impression will be formed one way or the other. Perhaps it will be so vague and inconclusive that you may call it a "gross generalization" but the flavor is there and so is the aftertaste.

The reason to post reviews or to share opinions with others on a forum such as this, even though they're ultimately pretty meaningless, is that these discussions can help you sort things out or give you new ideas...and it's supposed to be fun. In general, I do not recommend making any serious decisions about hi-fi design based upon what someone says in a review on the internet. To do so, would be foolish. For any given piece of gear you can find 100 people calling it warm and sweet and 100 people calling it harsh and nasty. There are to many variables. Even the audio magazines aren't to be taken seriously. They're little more than pulp and pornography; entertainment.

When you're really stuck and you need to lean on someone's evaluation, it's pretty obvious which ones will help you and which are a waste of time. For example, if person X's profile states that they are close to my age, using British monitor speakers, Cardas cable, etc, etc...I might read through a few of their other posts and see if I generally agree and if so, I've found an ally. On the other hand, if person Y is in a nursing home, listening to horn speakers, screechy tube amps from certain early manufacturers, and exclusively Audio Technica cartridges...I'm probably not going to find very much in common with them, though I still may find their posts interesting.

Gonna go listen to "Generallys and Majorlys" by XYZ on a belt drive table now......
