I bought cheaply Amherst Audio P-2000 with MM phono stage and I quite like what I hear. Nice mimimalistic design which can be run in passive mode.I would go for introductory ,early units designed by gifted and passionate designers before they burned out and started to produce crap for high-end snobs exchanging ideas for thick front plate. Audio Note M1 old pre has great phono section and can be tweaked to hearts content. Nad 1020 is lovely as well. $1k and below will buy you a lot of preamp in second hand market. I had yamaha esteemed pre at home and it was
rather bland sounding and I quickly returned it. Rgrds, W
