I'm sorry, but I do not recall the inmate who hipped me to pmsummer's approach. Until I started using the Zerostat this way, I had very mixed results with it – to the point where I retired it and switched to a StaticMaster for a couple of years. Since I began using the 'stat as described by pmsummer (and below), I've had consistent great success.
To reiterate redundantly, albeit with a few added details that work very well for me:
1. Hold the LP in one hand (fingers near spindle hole and thumb on edge works best for me and my hands).
2. Point the Zerostat at/near the center of the disc. As you squeeze the trigger very slowly , very smoothly , and very steadily , move the Zerostat away from the LP's center. It seems to work best for me when I am still actively pulling the trigger until the Zerostat is at least 3" beyond the edge of the LP.
Usually that is it. No repeated sqeezes, except infrequently. (A bad pull? Very high humidity? I dunno.)
Absolutely – repeat, ABSOLUTELY – NO "release the trigger slowly while pointing it anywhere near the LP," let alone pointing at it. This seems to be the single most important part of the process I'm suggesting here. (Well, besides a good trigger pull ….)
I do release the trigger somewhat slowly – with the Zerostat an arm's length away from the LP and pointing away from it – but that's just me trying to take care of the 'stat itself.
N. B., I do my best to maintain roughly 2" – 4" distance between the tip of the 'stat and the LP's surface during the treatment.
Regarding the difficulty of pulling the trigger slowly enough so that there's no "click," I think the "smoothly and steadily" mentioned above are almost equally important to the "slowly."
Hope this helps,
