What oil / grease to damp cueing on turntable?

The cueing on an older turntable I just bought was sticking. I took the cueing assembly apart and found that what was presumeably once oil or grease was now closer to glue. After cleaning, oiling and reassembly, I find that the cuing now holds up for a moment then drops the stylus in free fall. I guess this is one way to test transient response of the cartridge but not quite what I was looking for. I suspect that I need something more like vaseline to get the speed right. Can anyone make any suggestions that would save me some time experimenting with different materials? BTW, the arm is a "Profile" mounted on a Systemdek IIX.
