Whe comparing speakers I use 30 year old Stax headphones as a reference. Mine are the "New SR-3 electrostatic ear speaker" with the SRD-5 adapter to drive them. I would imagine that any of the full electrostatic Stax models would be just fine. I am not sure about the electret models. While old models like mine are relatively inexpensive now, I have found that the better the speaker, the more it sounds like my Stax and I believe that they would still be useful in assessing modern speakers costing as much as a new car.
A particular benefit when assessing speakers is that there is no headphone preamp involved. The Stax are driven directly from the amplifier's speaker terminals and see exactly the same signal as the speakers.
It is easy to find them on Ebay and I've included a link to a stax site that will give info about the history and different models.

David
