The Bottom Octave

I recently borrowed an amp to power an old band pass sub-woofer and liked what I heard. Running off the sub-out of my HT preamp it seems to give me about an extra octave in bass extension and also improve the ease and clarity through the rest of the range. The net effect was to make music sound more natural and appealing.

The down sides are the extra pieces of equipment, extra wires and that I can't use it on vinyl unless I use a separate crossover (and add still more complexity.

I could get a powered subwoofer but maybe some good vintage full range speakers to replace my Mission 753s would be a better and less costly option. They might match up nicely with my newly acquired Yamaha B2 / C2 amp and preamp.

I've started to checkout what might be available locally and seen a pair of B&Ws (DM-12 or DM-14 I think was the model) and a pair of Celestion Ditton 66s.

Any comments or suggestions?

David
