Yup, dad was right!

Per the Eico manual for the HF-12:

"The temperature of the transformers in the HF-12 run at less than 195 degrees despite the fact that the safety limited is at a much higher 221 degrees F. Although 195 degrees F is cool for a transformer, it is very hot to the touch. Transformers which seem too hot when touched with the hand, are usually good and actually not overheating."

A small muffin fan will do a tremendous job cooling the amp, a 240v fan run on 120v will turn slowly and silently.

Alternately change the 165 ohm cathode resistor to something a bit higher like 180 ohms.
