The C28 tends to lose the ground crimp on the internal leads. These are the gray co-ax cables inside the unit. It could also be a cap after all these years.
If you are using the sub out of the C39 you will need to bypass your external crossover or the one in the C39. Two crossovers will equal the sound you described.
The C39 should be as dynamic as your C28 but with a higher signal to noise ratio (when used in stereo).
Does your C39 have a six channel input or does it have the front L/R stereo balanced outs? There are two versions.
If anyone doubts that this is the same company you can call ahead and stopo by for a factory tour in Binghamton. This is the same factory since 1952 and yes they still repair C28s.
