Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Oh, yeah, and how.

Hi, Mark. Having experimented with solid state and hollow state for powering subs it seemed obvious the tube amps yielded a much more
organic pleasing sound. I settled on the Berning EA-230. This is a
design that uses output tubes pretty much class B. I tweaked the amp
some but even stock is was great. Another great amp for sub duty is
the RCA MI-9289: 4 TungSol 6550, gas regulated screens, built for
24/7 duty, 200 W continuous AB1. There are probably other great choices.
I tried Luxman MB-3045 as sub amps. They were great but I didn't think
it was the best use for the 3045 since the midrange and treble are so
exquisite with this amp. The Berning was the clincher. After I heard how
well tubes blended in sub duty there is no going back. The output tubes
in the 230 will last many years being operated Class B. Another amp to
try in bass duty would be any vintage McIntosh. I happened to have a
225 on hand. I think the Berning is still tops. Hope this helps a bit.
