Quasi-Complementary Output

In the thread below about the vintage Marantz, there was some discussion about quasi-complementary output circuitry and capacitor coupling.

The main reason for quasi-complementary outputs back before the early 1970s was because the reliability of PNP devices was decidedly inferior to that of NPN devices so designers came up with the quasi circuits to utilize only NPNs.

Of course, better PNP devices became available fairly quickly and true complementary circuits could be used but some designers continued with the quasi circuits as they were proven.

Heathkits are examples of quasi usage and they sound terrific.

Others commented on reasons for caps but I think it was to ensure that DC would not be passed to the speakers in case of output or other circuit failure in those early SS days.
