Need help figuring out Pilot 746 tube receiver inputs....

I just found a beautiful Pilot 746 tube receiver; a rare piece. I'm trying to figure out the inputs. There are TAPE, TAPE REC, PHONO, PHONO REC, and TAPE HEAD. I'm trying to run a cd player through the unit. So far I've not tried the phono inputs for obvious reasons. There is no AUX. The TAPE input sounds rolled off and is extremely attenuated; the volume can be turned up full and the signal is not very loud. TAPE HEAD obviously is too hot; plugging in a cd player produces distortion. Right now I'm plugged into TAPE REC and this is the closest thing to normal I've found. However, it's really hard to tell. Anyone familiar with this model who can help me decipher the puzzle? The input selector switch has TAPE, TAPE HEAD, PHONO, FM STEREO, AM, and FM. Right now I'm on TAPE and again, plugged into the TAPE REC input. Thanks
