RE: Stereo Reel-Reel@1952; Stereo LP@1958...

IT, hi. "Fanta" sound (Walt Disney Co) was actually much more complicated than just 3 channels. It employed sub-audible steering tones to activate different playback channels/speaker placements. There is pretty good photo documentation of all the sound gear filling up space in the Academy of Music in Philadelphia where the Fantasia tracks were recorded. Anyway, lots of on line materials about it. All of this was for the Road Show presentation of Fantasia. Disney also wanted to film it in a widescreen format but the distributors fought back. Speaking of widescreen it is funny that what turned out as Paramount's Vista-Vision "motion picture high fidelity" or lateral 6 perf pull down with no anamorphia (also used by Lucas Film for all Star Wars special effects at ILM) was a purchased and abandoned 'lazy-eight' format going back to the 20's. Fun. fun.
