RE: You might try going to an active crossover

Don't sell the AC-22 short - just swap the input and output op-amps for LM4562 and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

On the original AC-22 the op-amps of interest are the 8 pin ones (leave the filter section alone) Z1/Z2 are the output buffers, and make the largest improvement, but I swapped the input buffers Z100/Z200 as well.

Desoldering the 8 pin op-amps is fairly easy, install some machine pin sockets and you're all set.
