I think the sad & fast end of RCA can be placed squarely on the head of David Sarnoff who appointed his son, Robert, to run the company. Very quickly the logo changed and so did a lot of other things. RCA diversified. Remember that buzz word from the late 60's 70's? Gulf & Western bought Paramount Pictures - dubbed Engulph & Devour by Mel Brooks. Under the leadership of the Junior Sarnoff RCA plunged into many other endeavors. Frozen foods is the one I chiefly remember. With an idiot (of fool if you prefer) at the helm this once mighty company started an almost vertical dive and quickly disintegrated on impact. After ruthlessly consolidating his power as chief exec over the decades Sarnoff died before he could see what his offspring wrought. Perhaps this was poetic justice for robbing Edwin Howard Armstrong of any patent monies due him from using Frequency Modulation for the audio portion of NTSC transmitted television and all the other lawsuits Armstrong battled RCA over. If interested in Sarnoff I heartily recommend the documentary Empire of the Air.
