Sony CDP X777ES, Denon DCD 3300

My Sony X777ES is from 91 and my Denon 3300 is from 88. In CD players, I think of that as vintage. They were both TOTL at the time with great build uality and each listing at $1,700.

Both are heavier than many amplifiers. The Sony weighs 17kG (37 lb) and the Denon weighs 14kG (32 lb).

I have had them for a few years and they have not needed any service. Both read anything I put in them and work fine. If they fail, parts might be difficult to get but they show no sign of problems yet.

Both sound very good to me. From time to time I try something else to see if I hear an improvement. The only newer CD player I have tried that I thought sounded significantly better than the Denon was a Linn Ikemi. The Sony sounds a bit different from the Denon and I prefer the Sony in my current system.

If I want better sound in a new CD player, I suspect that I would have to pay over $2,000. If I want equal build quality in a new CD player I suspect that I would have to pay over $5,000.

David
