RE: Sony TAE-5450 Preamp Question

tbcblues, hi. You have a gem in the TAE-5450. This was produced at the time Sony unveiled V-Fet amps - TAN-5550 (50W per ch) and 8550 iirc. I think you have it re unplugging the power amp if wanting to listen via headphones sans amp. Too bad you didn't get the 5550 or the 100W V-Fet amp with the 5450. The prices on all the V-Fet stuff was much higher than its regular transistor counterparts. The sound was very tube like, totally un-transistory. V-Fet devices were expensive to make which spelled market doom for them only a year or two later. It was not long after that Sony dove into sonic screw up pulse-width modulation amps. The V-Fet's were so much better. Happy Listening.
