RE: Ethical issue buying vintage equipment

I guess that my behaviour is similar to yours but it varies with circumstances.

Taking your $100 item for $5 for example.
One circumstance might be where I really want the item, it is obvious that the seller really needs the money, it is just after the sale has opened, and i'm pretty sure that someone else will buy it even if they price it at $100.
Another circumstance might be that we are both really busy, they just want to get rid of the stuff and don't really care about the money, in 10 minutes time they will be taking what is left to the landfill, I don't really want the item but would hate to see it destroyed, and I only have $5 in my pocket.

Your friend's son seems to believe that if you have put in the effort and money to acquire specialised knowledge you have an obligation to not only provide that to others for free but particularly so where doing so is contrary to your own interests.

If so, how does he put this into practice as a lawyer?

David
