RE: Interesting link on radio history:...

J.S.Bach, hi. Very interesting information on Barton. I think Sarnoff may be the key to his relative obscurity. A clue to all of this can be gleaned from the fact that RCA never paid Armstrong a penny for use of Frequency Modulation in Television transmission/reception even though FM clearly was an Armstrong invention. Sarnoff and RCA knew just how to work the patent office and when this proved troublesome would just go ahead and infringe. The infringee would have to mount a legal assault on the Radio Corporation of America to seek redress. Imagine how these things could be dragged on and on in the courts. This was how Sarnoff repaid Armstrong for giving the world heterodyne and super het. After WWII the "General" as he liked to be called was happy to cheat Armstrong and battle him in the courts - destroying the Armstrong Yankee FM network in the process by influencing the FCC to move the FM band to what it is today. The rapacious and vicious nature of Sarnoff is revealed by his actions. There were lots of brilliant inventive minds at RCA relatively unknown today. John Volkmann comes to mind. RCA moved to manufacture Ampliphase transmitters in the 50's. As I understand the theory of operation Ampliphase was a clear departure from needing huge modulation transformers. Called by some "amplifuzz" they did require a precise tuning of two out of phase RF signals to produce super modulated AM of excellent audio quality. If an engineer couldn't rise to the occasion it would sound fuzzy.
