Re: MC-225 issues

ketchup, hi. The 225 has a voltage doubler (two caps) and a triple section electrolytic downstream. You can rework the doubler with good low ESR electrolytics. Ditto the downstream cap - which really only requires a double section as two of the original three are paralleled. I would choose Black Gate VK 150uF 350V for the doubler and Black Gate WKZ double section for the downstream. I suggest this combo because of the results achieved with it in rework of my own 225. As Mikey Samra says - you can get the parts you need from McShane or from any other big parts vendor - Mouser, Newark, etc. I would also go with Fairchild Stealth diodes as B+ rectifiers and also bias supply. Put a Black Gate in the bias supply too. Get the 225 schematic if you don't have one. You will see some R that should be 1%. Make sure they are. Beyond that I would check every R in the amp. Those carbon comp R are not stable in value over time. The 225 is a superb amp that can be made even more sublime. I am convinced via performance change in my reworked 225 that despite the 225's reputation and sonic glory it can be propelled into almost another universe of transcendant excellence. If I had not heard it I probably would not believe it possible. It is.
